The Museum started as an idea in 2001 when Cynthia Flowers decided to establish a museum dedicated for photography. Thereafter, she gathered Charles J. Levin and Vincent Sorrentino to put up what was then known as the Tampa Gallery of Photographic Arts. Its first exhibition was a collection of 50 black and white photos, collectively entitled as “Masters of Black and White.” From then on, the Gallery organized several other programs such as outreach programs, community programs, all geared towards the sustenance and establishment of the museum. Several workshops were also organized. By the summer of 2006, the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts was established and relocated to Downtown Tampa.
Presently, the Museum is dedicated to providing photographic art which depicts its centrism to contemporary life and culture. The Museum has preserved and exhibited several artworks by different photography artists not just in the country, but all over the world.
Past exhibitions that the Museum has previously shown include those of Berenice Abbott, Bruce Dale, and Cathy Dutertre. The Museum also has several events lined up for everyone to enjoy. In fact, you could even rent the venue for your own personal show. Some of the events that the Museum has hosted include workshops and seminars that would give you a chance to improve your photography skills. Some events also include talks which provide an in-depth detail into how photography has shaped the modern world.
Should you want to visit the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in Tampa, Florida, you can spot them at the 2nd and 3rd floor of The Cube located in 400 N. Ashley Drive. The museum is open from Monday to Saturday with rates of admission starting at $8.
